NOLA City Bark Funds Raised $400,000

The gates will be opening soon at New Orleans
much-anticipated NOLA City Bark!

Major construction is nearing an end, our excitement is building and we now anticipate opening in March!   Although the record rains in October delayed some of the construction work,  it’s a beehive of activity at the dog park site now!  Next on the list of pre-opening projects is installation of the fence to enclose the park, completion of the bathroom renovations, additional tree plantings and installation the electronic security systems for the dog park members’ swipe cards. These projects need to be completed before we can actually open, but can’t be started until the major construction work is finished.

Here’s an update on what’s been happening over the past two months:  our winding concrete walking paths have been installed, the grounds have been sprayed for fleas – the first of several scheduled sprayings; the green lawn spaces have been hydro seeded, our dog-wash stations have been installed, the brick pillars and walks have been completed and painted and we’ve done some initial landscaping at the entrance to the dog park.

Macy's Volunteers

On November 2 - a beautiful fall day – 20 energetic volunteers from Macy’s spent the entire day working at City Bark as part of the company’s holiday ‘Believe‘ campaign.   They came ‘packing’ 1800 4" pots of Asian jasmine ground cover, 4 crape myrtles, 10 cubic yards of garden soil, and painting supplies for the bathroom interiors and for our two fire-hydrant bollards.

Macy's Volunteer workers - thank you

These hard-working volunteers landscaped the NOLA City Bark entrance area by planting the jasmine ground cover between the existing ancient live oaks and transplanting eight azaleas, two holly ferns, and a dozen agapanthus, from another location.  Macy's volunteers also sanded, primed and painted the interior of the existing bathrooms and, finally, they painted our antique fire hydrant bollards a bright Macy's red!  Later that afternoon, Acadian Landscaping volunteers installed the four crape myrtles in the entry plaza. What a transformation!

‘Greening’ the Bark Park !

When it opens, NOLA City Bark dog park will feature a full canopy of trees, as well as hundreds of landscaping shrubs, plants and supplies generously donated by three area nurseries – Perino’s, Garden Gate and Bamboo Gardens.

On a recent November Saturday morning a caravan of trucks, SUVs and volunteers converged to pick up and transport hundreds of trees, mulch, plants on both sides of the lake. Perino’s in Metairie donated 40 trees - including bay magnolias, pine and redwood – 100 liriope, numerous philodendron and crape myrtles and 750 bags of mulch. Garden Gate of Metairie added its generous donation of more than 200 landscaping plants – six palms, two travelling palms, more than 30 azaleas, 30-plus holly bushes and over 30 fragrant rose bushes. Additionally, Bamboo Gardens of Louisiana in Mt. Hermon contributed 75 bamboos shrubs. The trees and plants are being stored and cared for by volunteers until they can be installed in various spots around the dog park.

A truck-load of grateful barks, yips and yelps to these generous local companies for helping to make NOLA City Barknot only the city’s premier dog park but a green oasis too!
